The Issue

This section is under development.

Many Canadians open a Tax-Free Savings Account believing it is a simple way to save and invest. What many don't realize is that accidentally contributing more than their available TFSA contribution room can trigger a penalty that continues month after month until the excess is removed.

Since 2009, more than one million Canadians have been assessed TFSA excess penalties totaling close to $1 billion.

For many Canadians, the issue is not intentional tax avoidance. It is a lack of awareness, delayed notification, confusing rules, or simple mistakes that can result in penalties far greater than anyone expected.

This movement believes Canadians deserve:

• Clearer information before opening a TFSA

• Better warnings before penalties accumulate

• Earlier notification when contribution limits are exceeded

• Fair administrative practices that prevent small mistakes from becoming financial disasters

• Legislative reform that protects Canadians while preserving the integrity of the TFSA program

This website is dedicated to educating Canadians, raising public awareness, and building a national movement for practical reforms that help prevent more Canadians from becoming TFSA penalty victims.

Check back soon as we continue adding educational resources, research, and practical information about the TFSA excess penalty program.
